Lots of people ask us how to get into magic, and what sort of rules are there ? Well, we have put together these guidlines for anyone who wishes to improve the standard of their magic. 1) Never reveal the secrets to your magic, if you do your audience will probably be disappointed and you will loose the respect they have for you as a magician, also you will not be able to perform that trick to that group of people again. If you are asked to disclose your secrets you can always say that the rules of this society forbid this. 2) Never immediately repeat a trick that you have performed unless it is an effect designed to be repeated, if you do you will have lost the surprise and your audience will be more likely to work out your secret method. 3) Never show a trick until you have practised it thoroughly in private, if you do you are more likely to make mistakes and give away the secret which will also lower your self confidence. Practise your tricks until you can do them smoothly almost without thinking. 4) Don’t try to learn too many tricks all at once, it is far better to do a few tricks really well than to do many tricks poorly. 5) Simply knowing the secrets to tricks does not make you a magician, you need to be able to present them in an entertaining manner, think carefully about your patter and presentation. It is just as important what you say as what you do. 6) Don’t be cocky or challenging when you perform your magic or your audience will resent you and will only be too happy to catch you out and try to trip you up. 7) You should watch other magicians and learn from them, but you should not copy them. Find your own style, be yourself, be natural. 8) If another magician is performing in your presence, never interrupt them or push yourself forward and never say "you know how it is done". 9) Always be polite and clean and tidy, as a performer you will be subject to public scrutiny and should be beyond criticism. Pay particular attention to your hands especially when working close up. 10) When performing your magic avoid going on too long, you don’t want to bore your audience, always remember the rule : leave them wanting more, that way you will keep your audiences attention and they will look forward to your next performance.
